This painting was inspired by a teenager I knew in London who set out innocently with a handmade sign offering free hugs. She wanted to bring a little kindness into a busy city street, unaware of the complications her endeavor would invite. To me, the painting became about the collision between intention and response — the purity of giving meeting the darker reality of the world.
